Baburin, Sergey Nikolayevich

(1959– )
   Politician.
Born in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan, Sergey Baburin holds a PhD in law from Leningrad State University. While serving in the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, he was one of the few high-ranking officials who voted against the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He achieved national prominence during the constitutional crisis of 1993 for his strident anti-Yeltsin position, accusing the president, as well as Mikhail Gorbachev and other prominent politicians, of being a disloyal “fifth column” of the West. Baburin established the Narodnaia Volia (People’s Will) movement, which ultimately became the People’s Union (now the Russian All-People’s Union). His political views are nationalistic and Eurasianist. He is vice chairman of the State Duma.
